The 45th Walker Cup match was won by Great Britain and Ireland…
Great Britain and Ireland won 16½-19½ securing the overall win with 6 matches still to go at Royal Lytham & St Annes. A record score AND with the largest number of Irish Golfers ever in the team (5) which warrants hearty congratulations to the GUI and reflects their support and investment in amateur golf. Leading 10-6 after the morning foursomes, the GB&I team needed only 3½ points from 10 singles matches. Victories for Ashley Chesters and Jimmy Mullen, Cormac Sharvin and a half from Paul Dunne secured the half-point needed for victory for GB&I’s ninth Walker Cup win, after world number two Maverick McNealy missed a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th.
Irishman Paul Dunne, who led The Open after 54 holes before fading on the final day, added: “I will take winning over 30th place every day. It’s so much better to do it as a team. Nigel Edwards has been a fantastic captain. He inspired us from start to finish.”
